ISome of the geographical skills taught include map and fieldwork skills, collecting and analysing data, and communicating the information in a variety of formats, becoming more complex and varied over time.
The Geography curriculum has four aspects:
· Locational knowledge (where places are located )
· Place knowledge (contrasting a local area with a non-European and a European area)
· Human and physical geography
· Geographical skills and fieldwork
Geography at Chinley Primary School is taught as a discrete subject or within an intergrated topic approach, linking with history, Literacy, IT, PHSE, art, drama, music, maths and science.
The Foundation Stage follows the EYFS ‘Understanding the World’ objectives which encourage the children to make sense of their physical world and their community. They gradually gain experience of the world around them, which is enhanced by stories, non-fiction, rhymes, poems and songs to foster their understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world. Talking about their experiences develops their knowledge and vocabulary.
In KS1 pupils further develop knowledge about their locality, the different parts of the United Kingdom and the world. They are introduced to basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography, and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.
KS2 pupils extend their knowledge and understanding to include more about the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This includes the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. We aim to develop their use of geographical knowledge, skills and understanding, realising the fragility and interconnectedness of issues.
