Curriculum/ Physical Education

At Chinley School, we have prioritised 4 aims for Physical Education which are: - Increase participation in sport and healthy activities. - Encourage pupils to adopt healthy lifestyles. - Increase pupil participation in competitive sport. - Provide training for staff so that sport provision is embedded and sustained in our school (CPD)

At Chinley School we are committed to ensuring that school staff are supported to deliver high quality PE activities; in order to do this we will employ specialist staff to deliver CPD to staff and to teach pupils alongside school staff in order that they can learn to deliver the activities.

All specialist staff will be qualified to at least level 2 in their sphere of knowledge; will have all relevant DBS checks made and where possible references obtained regarding their quality.

KEY STAGE 1

Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination, individually and with others. They should engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations (National Curriculum 2014).

 Pupils are taught to:

-        Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

-        Participate in team games, develop simple tactics for attacking and defending

-        Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Activities which pupils may take part in are – tag rugby; athletics; skipping; dance; gymnastics; football; quick sticks hockey; swimming;  amongst many other activities.

 KEY STAGE 2

Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success (National Curriculum 2014).

 Pupils should be taught to:

 -        Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination

-        Play competitive games and apply basic principles for attacking and defending

-        Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.

-        Perform dances using a range of movement patterns

-        Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team

-        Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvements to achieve their personal best.

Activities which pupils may take part in are – tag rugby; athletics; cross country running; climbing; dance; gymnastics; hockey; netball; football; cycling; cricket; rounders; swimming; amongst many others.

 SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY

All pupils must have the opportunity to take part in swimming activities. At Chinley School we have chosen to develop swimming in Year 1 and then again in Year 5. The additional Year 1 swimming sessions are funded by utilizing part of the sports premium funding.

 ORGANISATION

PE is taught as a separate subject although wherever possible we try and tie physical activities in with topic or whole school focused work such as in dance. The subject timetable provides each class with two hall sessions as well as an outdoor session of PE each week.

Our aim is for pupils to have at least 2 hours of physical activity weekly.
