Welcome to our Class 1 information page!
Class 1 is an exciting year as the children continue to build on their learning from Reception and become increasingly independent, confident and curious learners. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum, linking learning to real-life experiences wherever possible, whilst making learning enjoyable and fun.
Learning through play remains an important part of life in Class 1. Children will have opportunities to explore, investigate, create, problem-solve and work together, both independently and alongside adults. We believe that children learn best when they are engaged, curious and able to apply their learning in meaningful ways. Play provides wonderful opportunities for children to develop their ideas, practise new skills and follow their interests.
Our topics are inspired by the children's interests and provide opportunities to learn across the curriculum. Throughout the year, we will explore:
Circus
Toys
Pirates
Dinosaurs
Castles
Weather and Plants
Please see our long-term planning and topic maps for more information about what we will be learning.
Phonics and Reading
Phonics remains an important part of our learning in Year 1. Throughout the year, we will consolidate the phonics knowledge and skills developed in Reception and continue to build confidence with reading and spelling. In June, the children will take the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.
We will also enjoy a wide range of stories and books, developing vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and, most importantly, a love of reading.
Maths
Maths will be taught through a mixture of whole-class teaching, practical activities, games, problem-solving and opportunities to apply mathematical skills independently. We will encourage children to explain their thinking, make connections and use maths in meaningful situations.
We are looking forward to a happy, exciting and creative year in Class 1, where children can explore, discover, create, play and learn together.
